Building vocabulary can be a bore, but not with Flocabulary!
Flocabulary’s educational hip-hop videos give teachers important and valuable learning insights to help students master core literacy skills. Plus, they help get creative juices flowing as students write and perform their own educational raps.
When this hip company moved into their new offices in Brooklyn, they knew they needed a bright and colorful space to match their vibe. We sat down with Careyanne to talk about their awesome new office!
Describe the layout of your office. How does the office design encourage creativity, productivity, and team happiness?
Flocabulary has an open office, but we have also carved out spaces for quiet work and work away from the desk. We have several lounges with soft seating where you’ll often see a team member working with headphones and their laptop.
Highlights of the office include our Classroom where we have company-wide meetings. We often invite schools and students to tour Flocabulary so it’s not uncommon to find our guests in the space previewing one of our educational hip-hop videos. We also have an in-office music studio, so it’s common to find rap artists, music producers and beat makers working in our office.
Our meeting rooms foster creativity and collaboration with the built in whiteboards. We know that people work differently, so our meeting rooms differ in design. If you’d like to have a casual conversation, you might decide that the room with sofas feels best. On the other hand, maybe a round conference table would be a better fit. Either way, our rooms can accommodate. The colorful palette of the office with rugs and wallpaper also breaks the mold of a typical office, which can often feel drab.
Stepping into your office for the first time, what’s the first thing someone would notice? And what does it say about your company culture and values?
Stepping into the office, you’ll most likely see team members collaborating. It could be pairing on a code review or discussing a new learning strategy. Employees are not tied to their desk and take full advantage of the space.
How does your space handle the issue of privacy, for those who need it at certain times?
Flocabulary has dedicated Call Rooms for small one-on-one meetings, phone calls, or just a quiet place to work. Each room is tastefully decorated and allows for needed privacy. For mothers that have returned to work, we have a beautiful and private Mother’s Room that was thoughtfully added to the design of the space.
How long have you been in this space? Where was your office before that?
We’ve been in our office for 10 months. Previously we were in the same neighborhood (DUMBO), but in a smaller space.
What’s the best part about the surrounding neighborhood?
DUMBO is an amazing place to work. You feel a buzz with the tech companies and employees who have offices here. There’s also a lot of exciting development with the new areas, Empire Stores and DUMBO Heights. We have the best views in New York City, we’re located between two historic bridges and steps away from the beautiful landscape of Brooklyn Bridge Park.
